Jennifer Leigh Hicks was a Volunteer in the Houston Chapter of Amigos de las Americas during 1996-1997. Jenny Hicks died on July 18, 1997 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident which occurred one week before she was to leave for the Dominican Republic. Jenny lived for several weeks on life support and showed deep inner strength by fighting for her life. She was 17 years old.
She was an extraordinary young lady and would have grown up to be an equally extraordinary adult. From her photos you can see a fresh-faced young girl with freckles and a smile. Jenny loved the outdoors; she was active in soccer and field hockey and attended wilderness camps during the summers in Colorado. She was also active in Safe Rides, Young Life, and Habitat for Humanity, served as an Acolyte and was a member of the Junior Altar Guild of St. Martin's Episcopal Church. Jenny was a photographer, a poet and hoped someday to become a biologist. When Jenny heard about Amigos, she just knew it was for her!
Upon Jenny's untimely death, Mr. and Mrs. Hicks and her sister, Jessica, established the Jenny Hicks Scholarship Fund. On the plaque, there is a picture of Jenny participating in the infamous Bike-a-Thon. Her inspiration should help all volunteers find the courage and support they need to undertake their respective assignments. Here was a young lady who would have given it her all. Our thanks to the Hicks family for continuing to support Amigos.
Here Mr. and Mrs. Hicks and Jessica Hicks attend the AMIGOS FINAL BRIEFING, June 2001 for presentation of the Jenny Hicks Scholarship Award. |
